Film-making of the Documentary in Rural
Health Studies
Dr. Amy Martin, Deputy Director of the SC Rural Health Research
Center, collaborated with Susan Hogue, instructor in Media Arts
in the College of Arts and Sciences, University of South
Carolina, to bring a new look to rural studies. For the 2006 -
2007 academic year, students from Ms. Hogue's documentary
film-making class paired up with students from Dr. Martin's
rural health class to explore rural health issues. Funding for
developing the film was provided by the University of South
Carolina Office of the Vice President for Research, the Dean of
the College of Arts and Sciences, the Art Department, and the
Arnold School of Public Health.
The outcome is a one-hour film, Rx, that focuses on three key
issues affecting rural populations: critical access hospitals,
oral health care, and community health centers. An outline for
